The Levite passes by Jebus because foreigners live there. He expects to be safe among God's people in Gibeah. Instead, Israel acts like Sodom. The woman's hands reach the doorstep, the place where she should have found safety, but no one inside protects her. Later, the Levite tells Israel that the men wanted to kill him. He leaves out the fact that he pushed her outside to save himself. Sin does not only cause harm. It also changes the story afterward to hide the truth. God includes this terrible story because healing and justice begin when men stop covering what happened.
