The Ephod After the Victory

After the victory, Ephraim complains. The men of Succoth and Penuel refuse to help, and Gideon becomes harsh. He hunts Zebah and Zalmunna because they killed his brothers. Then he punishes the men of Succoth with thorns. Gideon refuses to be king and says, 'the LORD shall rule over you.' But he takes gold, makes an ephod, and leads Israel into idolatry. He has seventy sons and names one Abimelech, which means 'my father is king.'

• The man who was too afraid to act by day in chapter 6 is brutal by chapter 8. Unhealed fear often matures into cruelty, not courage.
• Gideon says the right thing about God being King, but his life tells another story. He refuses the title of king but lives like one.
• The ephod was made of the spoils of a God-given victory. The most dangerous idol is usually built out of yesterday's blessing.
• The ephod becomes a trap for Gideon and his family. His private compromise hurts the people closest to him.
• As soon as Gideon died, Israel went back to Baal and 'shewed not kindness to the house of Jerubbaal' (vv. 33-35). Nothing had actually changed in them.

2. 02He said the right thing about God's rule and then took the gold. What is your version of the ephod — the thing you built out of a real victory that people now look to instead of God?
3. 03How do you tell the difference between receiving honor and absorbing worship? Give a real test you could apply this month.
4. 04Gideon's compromise became his family's snare. What are you doing right now that your children or the men you disciple will inherit as normal?
5. 05He named his son 'my father is king' while publicly refusing kingship. What do your private decisions say that your public statements deny?
6. 06Where has success made you harsher with people who don't cooperate — Succoth and Penuel in your world?
7. 07What will keep you from becoming like Gideon in chapter 8? Name the person who will hold you accountable and what that person will do. Do not give only a good intention.

A man can be used by God and still have selfish desires in his heart. Gideon's life warns us that spiritual power is not enough. Ask God if something in your ministry has become an idol. Be willing to let it go.

The most dangerous season for the three of you is not failure; it is the year after your first real fruit. Build your accountability now, while you still think you don't need it.

Ask God to show you your ephod. Repent of any honor you have quietly enjoyed as worship. Pray protection over your household from your own compromises.
