Weekly Devotional

Reuben is not remembered for open rebellion. He is remembered for “great searchings of heart.” He stayed with the sheep and kept thinking until the chance to help was gone. Dan stayed with his ships, and Asher stayed safely by the shore. Their daily work became an excuse to avoid costly obedience. Meanwhile, God used the stars and the river in the battle. Creation was moving while God's people were still thinking. It is good to seek wisdom. But once God has made your duty clear, more delay becomes disobedience.

Setting the Scene

Chapter 5 is a very old Hebrew song about the battle in chapter 4. It praises those who freely came to fight. Then it names the tribes that stayed home. Reuben kept thinking by the sheep pens. Gilead stayed across the river. Dan stayed with his ships. Asher stayed by the shore. Meroz is cursed for refusing to help.

What to Notice

  • The song praises willing people before it names any hero. God notices those who freely show up and obey.
  • Reuben kept thinking about whether to help. He thought so long that the battle ended without him.
  • Meroz is cursed not for fighting against God but for not coming to His help (v. 23). Neutrality is a verdict.
  • Creation joins the fight: 'the stars in their courses fought against Sisera' (v. 20). The flooded Kishon did what chariots could not survive.
  • The song ends in Sisera's mother's window, counting spoil that will never arrive. The poet makes you feel the cost of the enemy's defeat.

Hard Questions

  1. 01Reuben kept thinking instead of showing up. Where are you thinking and talking when you should be obeying?
  2. 02If a song were written about this season of your ministry, would your tribe be in the willing list or the absent list? Be specific about why.
  3. 03Meroz was cursed for doing nothing. What is the 'nothing' you are right now doing that you have justified as staying in your lane?
  4. 04The song credits God with the storm, the river, and the stars. Where have you been taking credit for something the circumstances of God clearly did?
  5. 05Deborah calls herself 'a mother in Israel.' What does spiritual parenthood, not just leadership, look like for you with your men?
  6. 06Why do you think Scripture preserves a worship song that names people's failure? What does that mean about honesty in corporate worship?
  7. 07Which brother in this room needs you to show up for something, and what has kept you at the sheepfolds?

Think about the men who showed up, the men who kept making excuses, and the men who disappeared. Call the ones making excuses and talk to them personally.

Ask God to make you willing. Repent of doing nothing while calling it wisdom. Pray for the men who keep making excuses and need you to call them.
